jedi work: how to use empathy to repair microaggressions

jedi work: how to use empathy to repair microaggressions

jedi work: how to use empathy to repair microaggressions

Microaggressions reinforce systemic inequality, and lead to alienation in relationships and between organizations. To support your organization in developing relationships across racial and cultural differences, and to build a more inclusive and equitable community, this workshop will give members confidence, skills, and practice at repairing relationships when members make microaggressions, or similar mistakes that reinforce systemic inequities. This will help further your JEDI mission, including hearing from a diversity of voices and promoting social and economic justice.

Benefits of workshop

  • Renew one's commitment and build courage to connect across differences
  • Practice a way to calm the nervous system if stress begins to rise
  • Learn a process to acknowledge microaggressions and empathize with the receiver of the microaggression
  • Practice the process with a role play, share feedback
  • Build common language and practices within your organization
  • With more skills and practice, you’ll be more confident taking risks to connect across differences, knowing it’s ok if you "mess up" and you can use these skills to ‘fix it up’

about beth

Beth has regularly practiced with support groups, meditation groups, and Nonviolent Communication process groups since 2005. She knows the power of a group facilitated with deep presence and trust, and she loves to share this with others. Beth is a teacher by nature and profession; she enjoys sharing about emotional regulation, equity, empowerment, relationship and community development, and Compassionate Empowered Communication. She taught practicing teachers at CU for 7 semesters in the Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity program, and she has led MeetUp workshops since 2018, developing deep connection and community. The Group Coaching work is most informed by her 16 years of training in Marshall Rosenberg’s Compassionate Empowered Communication (also called Nonviolent Communication) and Mindfulness in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. Beth has completed teacher training in Nonviolent Communication and Mindfulness, Educational Equity, and in Life Coaching from the Life Purpose Institute. She also continues her learning and sharing as a member of ICF Colorado.

testimonial

Beth gave practical advice for real problems someone might be facing… the course lets you examine the problem yourself & work through what you need to. It was fun & helpful! ;-) Now I have tools I can use for other stressors, and the stressor I came in with today has lessened because now I’ve constructed a plan for it. You get to meet great people, and feel listened to and valued.

Lisa k.'s testimonial

Beth has a wonderful teaching style. She gives everyone a chance to speak and gives great feedback and lessons on the topic. I learned so much about feelings and needs from a recent workshop I attended. I've been practicing learning my needs and how my feelings in a variety of situations are affected by needs that are either met or not met. I so appreciate Beth's patience and knowledge of the subject. Thank you Beth!

Damon's testimonial

Feedback for me starts with the positive feeling of being in the group at the workshop. Beth breaking down the needs and feelings helps to put both ideas together into a more organized way within me. Interaction with the group added a positive feeling of support. I can leave the workshop today feeling better suited to identify and address my stresses. I would recommend the class to others.

testimonial

I enjoyed identifying the deep need. Beth was very helpful with that. I enjoyed meeting people and speaking in a meaningful way. The take away, requests, gives us something tangible to do now.
